There is a famous saying: "इंसान से खूबसुरत फ़रिष्ता और इंसान से बडा़ शैतान कोई नहीं।" (Translation: There’s no bigger Angel and Evil than a Human Being). Off late, we all came across a lot of these docuseries on Netflix like Ted Bundy Tapes, The Night Stalker and The Ripper. The details of their crimes will make us question humanity. All these documentaries made me wonder if we have any such cases in India.
So, I did some deep diving and came across some of the most gruesome crimes committed by most evil people in the Indian crime history. Some of them you might have not heard. Read on to find out. Also let me know in the comments if you have a story to share.
- India’s Youngest Serial Killer:
It was the year 2007 when the Bihar Police’s phone rang continuously which was quite unusual. When one of the officer’s received the call, he was informed about a village nearby where they wanted to handover a serial killer. The police rushed to the spot and they were handed over an 8-Year-Old Kid named Amardeep Sada (Amarjeet Sada in some reports) for the arrest. Police was confused about what was happening. Even when they were on their way to the police station, the kid just kept staring at them. It was quite hard for the policemen to believe that such a kid can be a serial killer. Even after they reached the police station, the kid kept smiling and kept asking for biscuits. Things changed as soon as the kid started talking about the crimes that had taken place in the village.
"खपडा़ दे मार-मार सुरा दीले।" is what he said when asked how he killed his 6-Month-Old neighbor Khushbu. (Translation: I killed her by beating her with a brick). Later, he confessed to have killed many more infants aged between 6-months and 1-year. His most shocking confession came when he said that he had also killed his own 1-year-old sister and some of his cousins. The killings never came to light because it was hushed up by the family. The kid showed no sign of remorse while narrating how he carried out the murders.
Born in 1998 in Begusaray, Bihar Amardeep Sada at that time was said to be the World's Youngest Serial Killer. His brutal ways of strangulating and killing children with bricks left the country Shell-Shocked when came to light in January’2007. “At a tender age, his eyes looked so dead and icy.” Superintendent Amit Lodha of Begusaray Police said. Reports about Amardeep smiling at the Judge who indicted him got a lot of media attention.
He went through a psychiatric counselling and was declared a Sadist at mind who takes pleasure in inflicting injuries to others. That was something which was curable. He was then shifted into confinement in his Juvenile Home where he was kept away from other children. Also, he was given mental treatments by the doctors. There are no reports about the kid’s whereabouts now as he might have turned 22-Years-Old. There is a possibility that he might have been released and is now leading a peaceful life. Or might be committing more crimes under a different identity.
- Sinister Sisters:
From the year 1990, the story of these half-sisters has been used as an example for result of wrong parenting. It all started when they saw their mother, Anjana Bai making a living out of pickpocketing and snatching jewelries from crowded areas. The woman had more than 125 cases registered against her for petty thefts. This left her then husband disgusted to a point that he left the three and married another woman.
This made Anjana Bai so angry that she and her daughters planned to kill her husband’s Kid with the other woman. But what started as a plan to extract revenge turned into frenzy by the three women kidnapping and murdering for their own purpose. They would kidnap and threaten kids not to make noise and take them out to crowded places to carry out their thefts. If someone caught them then they would return the loot to the people and say that the innocent kid might have picked it by mistake.
Once they were done with their work, if they believed that the child was not needed anymore then they would abandon them. If the children tried to retaliate in anyway, they would kill them. 18-month-old Santosh was their first victim. He was thrown under a moving auto-rickshaw because he would not stop crying. They killed more than a dozen of children between the year 1990-1996 by smashing their heads to walls/poles, throwing them from a flight of stairs, pushing them in front of a moving car or just beating them to death. One of the sister’s confessed to have starved a kid and beat him to death because he kept asking for his mother. They bagged and left another 18-month-old girl in a local theater's toilet.
They were all nabbed in 1996. The mother died due to an illness shortly after the arrest. Seema and Renuka were convicted for 13 kidnappings and 5 killings of children. The two are awaiting a death penalty. Their plea for mercy was rejected in 2014. The plot of a 2019 Movie on OTT Platform Zee5, Posham Pa, Starring Mahie Gill, Ragini Khanna and Sayani Gupta was loosely based on the lives of these sisters.
- India’s Very own Ripper:
The word Ripper has been synonymous with Serial Killings. We all have heard of Jack the Ripper and Yorkshire Ripper. India has its own version of Ripper. Born in Mala (Thissur), Kerala, K.P. Jayanandan turned out to be one of the most brutal serial killers in Indian Criminal History. His first crime came to light in September’2003, when he broke into 45-year-old Jose’s home near Mala killing him with the crowbar in his sleep. He then robbed Rs.17,000/- and a video cassette player from the property.
Second attack was again reported under Mala limitations when he broke into a house killing Naseeba, 51, Fausiya, 23, Noorjahaan, 28 and two children before the robbery. Third burglary was reported in Perinjanam, Thrissur district where he killed Kalapurackkal Sahadevan, 64 and his wife, Nirmala, 58. His next attack was at a house in Kodungallur, Thrissur, where he attacked Aravindaksha Panicker and wife Omana Panicker causing grievous injuries and robbing 18 tolas of gold ornaments.
Jayanandan then planned to go for an outlet of Kerela State Beverages, North Paravoor. When the security guard Subhashakan challenged Jayanandan, he struck the guard on the head with an iron rod killing him. Jayanandan was arrested on 9th September’2006 while he was waiting to get his bicycle repaired at Nellayi Junction. He was sentenced to death by hanging in June’2008. However, the cunning ripper along with some other criminals escaped prison in June’2013. Kerala Police received a lot of criticism for their negligence during this time. The ripper was later caught once again on 9th September’2013 and taken back to prison where he is waiting for the execution.
- Panic in Poona:
Pune has always been known for its peacefulness and people usually joke about spending their retired life there. The city is said to have a vibe that puts even the most restless soul to be relaxed. Everything changed in the winter of 1976 when four friends, Rajendra Jakkal, Dilip Sutar, Shantaram Kanhoji Jagtap, and Munawar Harun Shah went on a killing spree killing 10 people.
It started when the group along with another friend, Suhas Chandak planned on kidnapping their classmate, Prakash Hegde for ransom. However, after kidnapping and making Prakash write the letter about the ransom, they killed him by strangulation, stuffing a nylon cloth in his mouth. His body was then inserted into an iron barrel with some stones and dumped into the lake at Peshwa Park. Later they sent the ransom note to his father. The gang fled after getting the ransom.
After an unsuccessful loot attempt at a local businessman’s house in Kolhapur in August, the gang (without Suhas Chandak) killed and robbed Achyut Joshi and his family in October in similar way. They would stuff the victim’s mouth using a nylon clothe and strip them naked if they wanted. They would kill them once they found all the valuables in the property. Similarly, they killed 5 members of the Abhyankar Family of Smriti bungalow on Bhandarkar Road on 1st December’1976. Later in March’1977, they killed Anil Gokhale similarly and tied to an iron ladder, weighed down with boulders and dumped into the Mula-Mutha river near Bund Garden.
Initially, the police thought that these killings were results of botched robberies. However, after seeing the pattern, they realized that they were dealing with Serial Killings. The killers were apprehended on 30th March’1977 and after the mercy plea getting rejected several times, the four were hanged at Yerwada CentralJail on 27th November’1983. A 2003 Crime Thriller by Anurag Kashyap named Paanch is loosely based on these Killings.
- Cyanide Mallika:
This was the nickname of K.D.Kempamma, India’s first Female Serial Killer to get a death penalty. Kempamma was a resident of Kagalipura in Bangalore with her husband and three children. Her husband was a tailor. Prior to the killings, she ran a chit fund business which failed. This resulted in her being thrown of her own house. Kempamma then used to work as odd jobs like domestic help and later an assistant for a goldsmith. She often stole from the houses where she used to work. She was arrested by the Bidadi Police in 2001 for the same and was imprisoned for 6months.
Kempamma alleges to have killed countless women since 1999 till she was arrested again. The actual count is still unknown, but six cases were registered. She would frequently visit temples pretending to be a religious woman and prey upon distressed women. She would talk to them about their problems to gain their trust. Then she offered them to come to perform a Mandal Pooja later to another nearby temple that would help them overcome their trouble. She would ask the distressed women to wear all their jewelries for the pooja because they’re supposed to look like a bride during that time.
She usually called the victims to outskirts late in the nights. Once the victims arrived, she would start the pooja and feed them with water and food mixed with cyanide and hold their nose tightly. Once the victim died, she would rob her off all her jewelries and would flee the place changing her identity. She used to get cyanide from jewelry shops as its used to clean jewelries and learnt about cyanide poisoning from movies. Because of her modus operandi, she was nicknamed by the media as Cyanide Mallika.
In 2007, Kempamma went on a killing spree and killed around 5 women to rob them in less than three months. In five missing cases, all the victims knew Kempamma. Once this came to light, many other families with missing people came forward claiming that even their missing family member knew Kempamma. Kempamma was finally arrested in 2008 while trying to peddle one of her stolen set of jewelries. She was given a death sentence but that was reduced to life imprisonment.
- Mutilator who Challenged Cops:
Chandrakant Jha was one psychopath serial killer famous for inflicting brutal injuries to his victims. Leaving their mutilated body parts at various locations in Delhi and outside Tihar Jail, he would taunt the police. The individual was so sick in his mind that he would have dinner in the same room where his victims lay dead. He claimed to be an expert at chopping bodies. Chandrakant was born and raised in Maghderapura, Bihar.
In 1986, at the age of 19, he moved to Delhi and worked as a vegetable vendor. Later he started working in Delhi Markets as a hawker. He married twice and had 5 children with his second wife. They all stayed at Alipur, Delhi. However, he preferred keeping his distance from the family, so he stayed at Haiderpur, Delhi. Since he was from Bihar, Chandrakant would often help those in need of work and were new in Delhi. He would befriend them by helping them find a work and a place to stay. He met most of these men wandering in West Delhi and helped them. Jha would ask them to stay with him in Haiderpura.
Chandrakant committed his first crime in 1998 when he was found guilty of killing Mangal from Adarsh Nagar. He was also convicted for the murder but was released in 2002 due to lack of evidence. He felt that the police had not treated him correctly while he was in jail and wanted to get back at them and so he went on a killing spree from 2003 to 2007. He would continue tp help men in West Delhi with job and accommodation. However, he would pick fights with them for petty issues which lead to the killing. The victims were usually younger men. His pattern was to strangle the victim with nunchakus till they were dead. Later he would dismember their bodies, have dinner sitting near it and then throw the body parts around the city and near Tihar Jail taunting the police with a written note to catch him.
His second victim, in 2003, was Shekhar. Jha did not liked his habit of drinking, smoking, and constantly lying. So, he would strangle the boy with his nunchakus. His third victim was Umesh who was murdered in the most gruesome way. Umesh was caught lying and Jha believe that Umesh had betrayed him. So, he killed Umesh by strangulation and then he left his severed head outside Tihar Jail. Other body parts were found around the city. Police could never find out the identity of the victim until Jha himself confessed about it. That was, however, just the beginning.
Two years later, Jha killed another youngster named Guddu because he did not like Guddu’s habit of smoking weed. Guddu body was cut up into pieces and thrown outside Tihar Jail once again. Next victim of Jha was Amit in 2006 who was, according to Jha a womanizer. He too ended up being killed and severed and thrown outside Tihar and other parts of the city.
Similarly, Jha killed Upendra and Dalip in 2007. Upendra was punished for being sexually involved with Jha’s friend’s daughter. Dalip’s habit of eating non-veg irked Jha. Both the victims were killed in the same pattern and their severed bodies were thrown outside Tihar and other parts of Delhi. All the bodies thrown outside Tihar had written notes to Police challenging them to catch him. He also promised that there were many more coming.
Chandrakant Jha was caught in 2007 and he confessed to all the murders. He was given death penalty for two and life imprisonment for one murder in February’2013. His death penalty was commuted to life imprisonment without parole in January’2016.
- Stoneman Murders:
Mumbai is known as the city that never sleeps. Kolkata is known as the City of Joy. Both the metropolitan cities have always been the ones that people would always want to visit and live in. The cities are beautiful and vibrant in their own ways and never disappoints. However, things changed in Mumbai in 1985 and then in Kolkata in 1989. The cities were gripped with fear and the cops were always on high alert. The reason being the same- there was a serial killer on the loose.
It started with Sion and King’s Circle locality of Mumbai (then Bombay). The killer’s modus operandi was to find a beggar, or a rag-picker sleeping alone in a desolated area and then kill them by crushing their head with a stone. The stone used to be as heavy as about 30kgs. Victims were mostly left unidentified as they had no relatives or associates. Initially the police did not treat this as anything serious but after the sixth murder, they started to notice a pattern. They did get a slight breakthrough when a victim managed to escape the attack in Sion but could not see the assailant/s because of the darkness.
The last murder in Mumbai took place at Matunga in 1987 when a rag-picker was bludgeoned. The police went by the pattern of killing to claim that it’s the same person but there was no proper evidence or proof for the same. The killings stopped in 1988 and the case was never solved. The ubiquitous legend continued in the summer of 1989 when the killings started in Kolkata. The victims were once again being hit on the head with a heavy stone and bring killed. The Killings took place in similar pattern with a heavy stone or a concrete slab mostly in Central Kolkata adjoining Howrah Bridge.
Someone claimed that he had seen the suspect said he was a tall and well-built man. People also reported suspicious men who were brought in for interrogation but were let-go due to lack of evidence. The killings however stopped in the Winter of 1989 itself when the police deployment got tighter. However, there were several killings again reported in 2003 again in Kolkata and then in 2009 in Guwahati.
Krishna/Bikram Timung, a 22-year-old Drug Addict and psychopath, was arrested by the CID from the Paltan bazar area, Guwahati. Employed to remove bodies from near railway tracks, he confessed that he had killed the beggars with stones and sharp weapon. While he was nicknamed as the Stoneman, it was obvious that he was not the person behind the killings in Mumbai and Kolkata from 1985-1989. A total of 25 killings were reported in Mumbai, 13 in Kolkata and 7 in Guwahati. Mumbai and Kolkata murders remain unsolved. The whole incident was very well depicted in a movie named "The Stoneman Murders" with 60% fiction in it. However the reason for the killings could be the one shown in the movie. Possibilities are endless in such cases.
- Psycho Shankar:
Originally known as M. Jaishankar, he can be tagged as the Indian version of Ted Bundy. He was a sexual predator and a serial murderer. Shankar was involved in about 30 rape, murder and robbery cases across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. He managed to escape prison thrice before killing himself after another failed attempt.
Born in 1977 at Kanniyapatti, Tamil Nadu, Jaishankar moved to Salem where he resided with his wife and three daughters. He worked as a truck driver and would carry a machete in black handbag that he used in his killings. He started his murder spree around 2008 when he started kidnapping prostitutes from dhaba or women from farms off the highways. He would take them to a deserted location and rape them until they were dead. If anyone resisted, he would kill them. By August’2009, he had raped and murdered 12 women and raped another 6 women.
On 23rd August’2009, Psycho Shankar kidnapped, raped and murdered M.Jayamani, 39, a police constable who was temporarily stationed at Kangeyam all-women police station. Her body was recovered a month after the incident after which, the police started a manhunt. He was arrested on 19th October’2009 and jailed at Coimbatore Central Prison. Shankar confessed he took pleasure in torturing women before raping and then killing them. This demented individual is said to have raped several women till they died.
People breathed a sigh of relief as Jaishankar was caught. However, on 17th March’2011, while returning to Coimbatore State Prison from Fast-track court at Dharmapuri, under the supervision of M.Chinnasamy and Rajavelu, Shankar managed to escape at 9:30 PM at Salem Bus Stand. M. Chinnasamy could not deal with the backlash he received for this and shot himself to death on 19th March’2011.
From Salem, Shankar managed to escape to Bellary, Karnataka where he raped and murdered other six women over the next month. He then left for Dharmapuri and killed a man and a child there. Police tried to trace his cell phone but were unsuccessful. Escaping on a stolen motorcycle, on 4th May’2011, Shankar reached Elagi Village, Karnataka. He saw Chandrakala Hotagi working alone and approached to rape her, but she raised an alarm. Her husband, Prakash Hotagi and his friends rescued Chandrakala and caught Shankar while he tried to make an escape. He was handed over to the Chitradurga Police on 5th May’2011.
After his second arrest, he was sentenced to 27 years in prison and kept at Bangalore where he also received mental treatment. Once again, he managed to escape on 1st September’2013 at 2 AM in the night while the daily change of guard took place. He was said to have been wearing a police uniform while escaping and was injured as there were traces of blood found at the spot where he jumped off a 30 feet wall. 3 Wardens, 2 Jailers and 6 security Guards were suspended following the escape.
Red alert was announced all over South India. Posters were put up and pamphlets distributed everywhere to find Psycho Shankar. Police had requested women to stay as isolated as they could. A police informant managed to get in touch with Shankar and lured him to an old-broken building where he got Shankar arrested once again on 23rd September’2013. Thankfully Shankar could not harm anyone after he had escaped this time. He was treated for his broken knee and was sent back to Bangalore Central Prison to complete his sentence.
He was kept under 24/7 CCTV surveillance. His prison lock was designed in a way that he could not even reach for them. He was told that if he had an illness then he would be treated within the cell. Extra security was deployed while taking him to court hearings so that he could not escape. He did try another escape on 25th February’2018 but failed and was kept in Solitary confinement. Psycho Shankar committed suicide on 27th February’2018 slitting his throat with a shaving blade that he had acquired from a barber. The security guard found him dead in a pool of his own blood at 2 AM in the night. He was declared dead at 5:10 AM at Victoria Hospital at Bangalore, Karnataka.

- Baby Killer:
Darbara Singh, a pedophile and necrophile was the biggest blemish in the name of Indian Army. A native of Jallapur Khera, Punjab, Darbara Singh was stationed at Air Force Station of Pathankot while in Armed Forces. After an altercation with Senior Officer V.K. Sharma wherein he injured Mr. Sharma’s Wife and Kids by throwing a hand grenade near them, he was dismissed from the Indian Army and arrested. However, he was let go after a trial. He stayed with his wife and three children until he was thrown out of the house by his wife as she was unable to keep up with his bad behavior.
Singh raped and attempted to murder a migrant laborer’s daughter in 1996 but was caught. He was then convicted for three cases of rape and attempted murder and was given 30 years in prison in 1997. Later, his mercy plea was accepted on grounds of good behavior and he was released on 3rd December’2003. By this time, he had a grudge against the migrant’s as he believed that they were responsible for the time he wasted in jail. He then moved to Jalandhar and started working in Leather Complex Area. He lived in a rented room at Model House locality and started his spree of revenge on the migrants targeting their children.
Kids that Darbara targeted were of Non-Punjabi Migrants. His modus operandi would be to lure the kids to a secluded area by giving them toffee, food, sweets or sugarcane juice. Once he got them to the spot, he would slit their throats and then would sodomize and brutally rape their dead bodies. “I did this so that there would be no shriek of victims.” He said when asked about why he killed the kids. He confessed that he was never drunk while performing the acts but would celebrate his success with liquor and good food that night. Over a period of 7 months, Darbara had killed 23 kids. Some of the lucky ones who escaped, lived to narrate the horror they had gone through.
On 18th April’2004, Diksha, 8 and Asha, 6 were playing with two other cousins when Darbara approached them and promised to buy them shuttlecock and racket. He then took them to the banks of the river near Rayyia and asked Asha to sit on one side of the canal while he took Diksha into the bushes and raped her till she was dead. A frightened Asha fled the place as he saw Darbara in the act. Meanwhile, the family had filed a missing complaint with Jalandhar Police after the girls did not return for a long time.
A few days later, Asha was found in Fazilpur Village, Tarn Taran District and was taken to Khadoor Sahib Police Station from where she was sent back to Jalandhar. After that, police found Diksha’s naked body on top of big stone near Bahadurpur Uppal Canal. Postmortem reports stated that she had died of neurogenic shock as a result of injuries to her private area.
On 22nd August’2004, Darbara lured Tazbin, 10 and sister Mumtaz with sweets and gave them empty bottles. He asked both the girls to come with him to the market where they could sell the bottles for decent money. Tazbin came alone while Mumtaz refused. A week later, Tazbin’s mutilated body was discovered by the police. She too was sexually assaulted. The body remained unclaimed and was accordingly cremated at Phagwara.
Similarly, Nishu, 8 went missing while they were playing near their home on 18th October’ 2004. Her father registered a missing complaint the next morning and at the same time, Nishu was found near a sugarcane field in Mahadipur Village. She could not speak as her windpipe was slit and was lying in a pool of blood. She was treated at PGI, Chandigarh and was able to identify Darbara as her attacker and testified against him later in the court.
This was not the case of Khursheed, 5 and Ronku, 6 who went missing on 25th October’2004. After his arrest, Darbara led the police near Kadianwali Village where he had dumped the dead bodies of the children. Postmortem reports showed that both the kids were sodomized, and their private parts ruptured before they were killed. Here is a list of kids who were victimized by Darbara Singh.

Panic had spread around the city after the children had gone missing and no ransom was demanded. Later, a chopped arm of a child was found near Variana and a decomposed body of a 10-year-old girl was found near Chaheru. Police were then reported of a mentally challenged man on cycle with toffees being sighted in the locality around kids regularly. They helped create a sketch of the suspect. A Special Investigation Team analyzed his modus operandi and would apprehend the suspect as he matched the sketch. That person turned out to be Darbara Singh. His statements during the confession were a sign of the sick mind this person had.
Darbara said that he had no remorse at all for doing what he did and would have continued doing it if he was not caught “so early” by the cops. He said he did feel a little shaken after he killed a Punjabi girl by mistake but then later said that it had to be done as she would have become a problem for him. "I still think whatever I did was right and it was the demand of the time", but then adding "I think what was done by me was wrong and I promise that I would never do it again.” The psychopath killer died in prison on 6th June’2018 while serving his jail sentence. His family refused to claim his body saying that his crimes were unpardonable.
